in five orchestras and a harp ensemble. Philharmonic, Symphony, and
Young Artists are three full orchestras each with 100-115 members.
Sinfonia and Chamber Strings orchestras have 50 and 40 members
respectively.

Maryland’s Classic Youth
Strathmore’s
Ground-breaking Soloists…
On December 7, 8 & 9,
2004, MCYO soloists Michelle Gajewski, violin, Gina Mouser, flute, and
Greg Jukes, marimba, performed with the National Philharmonic Orchestra at
the new Music Center at Strathmore. They captured the attention and
imaginations of thousands of Montgomery County second-graders. An
historic event to cherish!
Uptown at Carnegie Hall…
Every year MCYO
Artistic Director Olivia W. Gutoff and select MCYO Philharmonic students
trek north to Carnegie Hall, NYC, to participate in the annual National
Festival Orchestra. Mrs. Gutoff and 24 students went to NYC January
14-17, 2005. High school and college students, from all over the
United States, participate in the Festival Orchestra. MCYO musicians
numbered 24 among the Festival’s 88-strong orchestra.
The group rehearsed
under Conductor Lukas Foss. On Jan. 16, at Carnegie Hall, they
performed Ravel’s Tzigane and Mahler’s “Titan” Symphony No. 1 in D Major.
MCYO students who earned principal chairs at Carnegie Hall were bassoonist
Katie FitzGibbon, percussionist Greg Jukes, and violist Matt Owens.
Also performing from MCYO were: bassoonist Sarah Speirs; cellists
Zenas Chang, Laura London, and Eugene Shyu; French Horn, Adedeji Ogunfolu;
oboist Jonathan Song; double bassists Taylor Gerber, Dario Olachea, and
Ron Shalom; trombonist Caroline Harbitz; trumpet, Bobby Kim; violists
Candice Amato and Soo Han; and violinists Carol Cheung, Daniel Chou,
Jennifer Coon, Michelle Gajewski, Rose Haag, Madeleine Jansen, Ruby Wang,
and Mo Zhu. Kudos kids!
Keeping the Dream Alive…
MCYO musicians and brothers
Robert and Alexander Yin performed at DC’s Lincoln Theater, for the 2005
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Performance and Scholarship Gala.
They played a Beethoven violin & viola duet, and sang a choral piece from
Handel‘s Messiah, “Surely He Hath Borne Our Griefs”. MCYO violist
Valina Yen accompanied them for the Messiah.
To be Warmed by Summer in Winter…
Summer Hu, principal
cellist in the MCYO Symphony Orchestra, touches all who hear her music.
On February 3, 2005, Summer performs for the Civic Dedication Ceremony for
the Music Center at Strathmore. Community dignitaries will be on
hand to hear Summer Hu, age 11, and Jonathan Carney, Baltimore Symphony
Orchestra (BSO) Concertmaster, perform two duets for cello and violin.
