A Conductor's View by MCYO Symphony Conductor, Scott Herman What an amazing year thus far, and there is still one more concert to go! This year has been filled with some varied and wonderful music. I was very pleased with the efforts and improvements which the Symphony students demonstrated during the March concert--a job well done on a very challenging program. The final concert will continue in the same fashion. The Symphony will open with the Brahmns Hungarian Dance No. 5, then show its elegant side with the Faure Pavane. Our spirits will be lifted with the "Finale" from the Sibelius Second Symphony, and finally close with Pirates of the Caribbean, an exciting orchestration of this well known Disney favorite. With the season winding down, I frequently have students inquire about opportunities for next year. Many times the question of "what piece should I perform?" arises. The best advice is to consult the advice of your private teacher who knows your individual playing skills from the week to week lessons. There is not a particular piece which the conducting staff will favor over another. We simply look for an artistic performance that display musical and technical abilities. Remember--the most difficult piece is not always the best option. Select a work which allows you to showcase your very best abilities. Try to step into the next level of literature carefully and avoid the common mistakes of jumping to a very advanced piece with the thought that it may be more impressive, or that it may better advance you into the higher orchestra. Most importantly remember "quality" is better than "quantity." Finally, please consider the viola! While violinists abound, there is a shortage state-wide of viola players. We urge violinists to consider switching over. The opportunities are immense in both MCYO, all-county, and all-state. Give it a try! Continued best wishes for a great finish to our season! |
