Why not try the Bass or Viola?
Each year we have had a staggering number of violinists audition for MCYO, so why not the bass or viola? The bass is in great demand because it is often overlooked because of its size for the younger students, and the viola, because most students simply start on violin. Bass and viola are a wonderful solo and orchestral instrument. The bass provides the foundation and depth for the orchestral sound, and the viola provides a lush, colorful, and rich sound to the string section. Both the viola and bass are critical components to a mature orchestral sound. With all of that in mind, what can you do to switch. First, contact MCYO about trying out an instrument, or stop and see your school orchestra director about trying them out. MCYO can assist students in trying the instrument and determining if it will be a good choice. MCYO can also provide a list of private teachers. Students will be amazed at how great they do and how easily skills transfer. Also, the technical demands for a young bassist can be adjusted very easily for a less experienced player. Also note that the bass and the viola, as the other strings, is also available in reduced sizes, so each student will play an instrument which will be suited to their size. Also, keep in mind that most of our current MCYO basses and violists began music on another instrument, and later switched in middle or high school. Please contact MCYO if you are interested in pursuing the viola or bass. Maybe in your search for a new instrument, you may discover the oboe, bassoon, or tuba instead. That’s okay, these instruments are also in great demand within the musical world. W even have handful of our MCYO musicians perform more than one orchestral instrument. Keep in mind that you can contribute your musical talents in the orchestra on a variety of instruments, and that with a some effort and hard work, you could be one of the rising new talents on a unique and special orchestral instrument. |
