He is a graduate of Montgomery County's Seneca Valley High School, and he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from the University of Maryland, College Park.

Mr. Herman has been the Instrumental Director at Cabin John Middle School for the past eighteen years. During his tenure the instrumental music program has grown from 75 students to 300, and is widely regarded as one of the finest music programs in Maryland. The ensembles have consistently received high acclaim with superior performances at both the district and state levels. In addition, Cabin John has had the highest number of middle school musicians represented from Montgomery County in MCYO, all-county, and the all-state ensembles. In 2001, the Cabin John Middle School Orchestra was invited to perform for Maryland Music Educators Association as part of their annual Spring Conference held in Baltimore, MD. In 1996, the Orchestra was selected to perform for the Montgomery County Public Schools Service Teacher Recognition Ceremony.

Mr. Herman has been instrumental in developing the Montgomery County Junior All-County Honors Orchestra program which he conducted for fourteen seasons. In 2005, Mr. Herman was a co-preparatory conductor with David Levin for the Montgomery County Senior Honors Orchestra. This season Mr. Herman will be guest conducting the Thomas Wootton Orchestra in their debut at the 2006 Mid-West Band and Orchestra Clinic. Recently, Mr. Herman directed the 2002 Maryland Junior All-State Orchestra. In addition, Mr. Herman guest conducted the 2003 Calvert County Senior Orchestra and the 2002 Baltimore County Public Schools Middle School Honors Band. In the spring of 2001, Mr. Herman was awarded “Outstanding Service to Strings” by the American String Teachers Association (ASTA). In addition to his regular school and youth orchestra duties, Mr. Herman is an active member of the Maryland Music Educators Association. He also adjudicates various music events throughout the state, and is frequently invited to work with school ensembles in the region. Mr. Herman’s private trumpet and string bass studio have been represented in MCYO, all-county, and all-state ensembles.
