Scott Herman - Instrumental Music Director

Scott Herman is the Instrumental Music
Director at Cabin John Middle School, and has also begun his tenth season as
the Symphony conductor for the
Maryland Classic Youth
Orchestras. He is a graduate of Montgomery County's Seneca Valley High
School, and he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from
the University of Maryland, College Park.
Mr. Herman has been the Instrumental Director at Cabin John Middle School
for the past eighteen years. During his tenure the instrumental music
program has grown from 75 students to 300, and is widely regarded as one of
the finest music programs in Maryland. The ensembles have consistently
received high acclaim with superior performances at both the district and
state levels. In addition, Cabin John has had the highest number of middle
school musicians represented from Montgomery County in MCYO, all-county, and
the all-state ensembles. In 2001, the Cabin John Middle School Orchestra was
invited to perform for Maryland Music Educators Association as part of their
annual Spring Conference held in Baltimore, MD. In 1996, the Orchestra was
selected to perform for the Montgomery County Public Schools Service Teacher
Recognition Ceremony.
Mr.
Herman has been instrumental in developing the Montgomery County Junior
All-County Honors Orchestra program which he conducted for fourteen seasons.
In 2005, Mr. Herman was a co-preparatory conductor with David Levin for the
Montgomery County Senior Honors Orchestra. This season Mr. Herman will be
guest conducting the Thomas Wootton Orchestra in their debut at the 2006
Mid-West Band and Orchestra Clinic. Recently, Mr. Herman directed the 2002
Maryland Junior All-State Orchestra. In addition, Mr. Herman guest conducted
the 2003 Calvert County Senior Orchestra and the 2002 Baltimore County
Public Schools Middle School Honors Band. In the spring of 2001, Mr. Herman
was awarded “Outstanding Service to Strings” by the American String Teachers
Association (ASTA). In addition to his regular school and youth orchestra
duties, Mr. Herman is an active member of the Maryland Music Educators
Association. He also adjudicates various music events throughout the state,
and is frequently invited to work with school ensembles in the region. Mr.
Herman’s private trumpet and string bass studio have been represented in
MCYO, all-county, and all-state ensembles.
