Welcome
to the Instrumental Music Department!
|
The Cabin John Middle School
Instrumental Music Department is a
thriving band and orchestra program with over one quarter of the Cabin
John student body enrolled.

The
Band and Orchestra program began in 1989 under the direction of
Mr. Scott Herman. The school re-opened with only 75 musicians,
but in
few years later the enrollment doubled to 150. Over the last decade
the Cabin John bands and orchestras have been regarded amongst the
finest in Maryland.
The sound of the Cabin John ensembles have been
compared to that of any outstanding high school program. As a result,
earlier recordings of Rhythm of the Winds and
Kentucky 1800
will be included in a national archive for the American Band Masters
Association. In addition, the Cabin John Advanced Orchestra was
invited to perform for the Maryland Music Educators in the Spring of
2001. Mr. Herman was invited to guest conduct the 2002
Maryland Junior All-State Orchestra. Cabin John offers many different
performing groups, and provides a wide variety of musical experiences
for musicians at any level.
How can music help my child?
"There is ample evidence that the
arts help students develop the attitudes, characteristics, and
intellectual skills required to participate in today's society and
economy. The arts teach self-discipline, reinforce self-esteem, and
foster the thinking skills and creativity so valued in the workplace.
They teach the importance of teamwork and cooperation. They
demonstrate the direct connection between study, hard work, and high
levels of achievement." National Standards for Arts
