The year in Review, by Scott
Herman - Instrumental Director
Another year with many amazing achievements. One of the biggest
highlights was taking our Intermediate Strings to county and state festival.
The students went from an elementary level to an advanced middle school
level in one school year. Their growth resulted in state scores which
averaged 32 out of 35 points per judge. One of our very own students
composed an amazing work for the orchestra. We showcased his work in
the Spring Concerts. We had a ton of kids make All-county, MCYO,
and All-State. A summary as follows:

The year in Review, by Scott
Herman - Instrumental Director
This school year may go down as one of the
most rewarding musically in school history. The accomplishments and
honors are extraordinary. To begin the school year, Cabin John
had 27 students who qualified for junior all-county. One out of every
four musicians in our advanced band and orchestra were selected. This is a
all-time school best, and a record which will likely stand for many years to
come!! Nine of these musicians went on to make all-state honors!
Our 6th Grade Program has been
flourishing. Our beginning classes are in full swing under the direction of
Mr. Kris Sanz, and we have excellent instrumentation in each of our
Intermediate classes.
Most note worthy is the accomplishments of
Cabin John's 6th & 7th Grade Intermediate Orchestra. This group earned
superior ratings at our regional festival, and later at the state festival.
This is quite extraordinary for a mostly 6th grade ensemble. In fact,
it is the first 6th grade group we have entered in a festival in school
history. Typically, our first year groups are not ready for an
adjudication. It takes many years for a group to develop the ensemble
skills which are necessary for a high level performance. Our
Intermediate Orchestra has been quite the exception.
In addition to the Intermediate Orchestra,
the Advanced Band and Orchestra also qualified and performed at the Maryland
State Festivals held on May 1 and 3. Our Advanced Band and
Advanced Orchestra received all A's and A+'s and were recognized with
straight "I" ratings from the adjudicators. It is quite an accomplishment to
be recognized of the small handful of music programs state-wide to achieve
such recognition.
Finally, the Cabin John Intermediate
Band 7 received all A's and "I" ratings at the MCPS "2nd Bands" Festival
held on April 27. They have improved measurably since the December
program and are beginning to take shape as next year's advanced band.
