It is also recommended that students own a folding metal music stand for home practice. A small electronic metronome and/or electronic tuner is also recommended!  The tuner of choice is the KORG CA-30.

Music and Instrument Care

MUSIC

1. Each music folder must have the student's name and school listed on it.
2. Use only a pencil to mark the music. Do not use any type of pen.
3. The folder and music must be kept in good condition. Replace or repair a damaged folder to avoid damaging the music. Students who lose or damage their music will be assessed a replacement fee.

EQUIPMENT

1. Make sure your name and school is attached to or placed in your case.
2. Keep your instrument in working condition. Periodically inspect your instrument and report any damage or maintenance needs.
3. Equipment is to be stored in its designated space. Do not leave instruments in the hallway. Small instruments may be stored in the hall lockers as well.
4. Instruments need to be kept clean, both inside and out for sanitary reasons and for better playing response. Do not chew gum, drink soda, or eat while playing an instrument.
5. Woodwinds and saxophones need to be dried out with a swab after each playing. Also, take the reeds off the mouthpiece after each playing. Flutes have a ramrod-cotton cloth device which is used for wiping the inside of the flute.
6. Brass instruments need to have the mouthpiece brushed out once a week with a mouthpiece brush and soapy water, and they need the lead-pipe (the pipe connected to the mouthpiece) brushed out once a month with a lead-pipe brush and water. The school has these brushes available near the sink in the storage room, or you can purchase the cleaning equipment and take care of this maintenance at home. Valves need to be oiled regularly. The tuning and valve slides need to be greased monthly. Trombone players need to properly maintain their slide with a light coating of slide cream and misting it with water before playing (slide oil is not recommended).
7. More detailed cleaning procedures will be discussed during class, such as bathing the small brass instruments and oiling keys on the woodwind instruments.
8. Percussionists will learn how to maintain the school percussion equipment. They will be responsible for keeping the percussion section in a neat and orderly manner.
9. String players need to wipe the rosin dust off the instruments with a clean cotton cloth. Students using school instruments are responsible for keeping their instruments clean.  All string players must loosen their bows after each use.
10. Students and parents will be financially responsible for repairs needed which are the result of misuse and neglect.
